Tramadol - Not Only For the Treatment of Pain

People who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), who have previously been on SSRIs, the common medication for the treatment of OCD, have found that their medication is very slow to act. Tramadol is an analgesic that works by binding itself to opioid receptors in the brain and inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin.

SSRI's are proven methods for the treatment of OCD, and controlled studies are being done to prove Tramadol's roll in treatment.

Although in previous research done on the addictive, and dependency issues with tramadol and other opiate-like drugs, and there seems to be low risks, you still have to be careful. Many people have stated that extended use of the drug can create a dependency, and some people have come to rely on the drug for extended periods of time. It's important to make sure the medication regimen that you decide to go on for your symptoms is discussed adequately with your healthcare professional to be sure that you are using the right medication for you.

Tramadol is mostly used as a back-up plan for patients that are taking the traditional SSRI medication that takes up to 8-12 weeks for results. Some patients feel no relief of their OCD symptoms, and tramadol can be a last resort. It's definitely not a common medication prescribed, except for pain, but continuous research is being done to establish grounds for the evidence and results that doctors have already experienced in the patients that they have tried the use of this medication on. The FDA has only approved it for the treatment of pain, but hopefully new studies will show that relief of symptoms in as little as 30 minutes to one hour will provide enough motivation to do something for the millions of Americans whose everyday lives are disabled by this condition of irrational fears, obsessions, or depressions.
